Go... to glory and the GRAVE!
Well, the watercoloring of the photos in the art quilts didn't work. I should have expected that, given that I've never been competent with watercolor. I guess I got carried away with the coolness of the quilt show and my excitement over this new project. :) No matter, I can use the watercolor crayons to hand-color some fabric in abstract patterns, which I can't go wrong at, and I'll check for paintable fabric dye for the pictures. Whee! They are going to look fantastic!

I have the following shots:

Benedict- i_aldarion
Deirdre- tyellas
Flora- meari
Gerard- one of snafu_07's friends
Llewella- my sister Jeni
Random- Rob

I need people for the following characters:

Brand- can't remember
Bleys- can't remember
Julian- long hair, no beard, mournful-looking
Caine- profile wearing tricorn hat
Eric- short hair, beard, kingly
Corwin- short hair, no beard
Fiona- long hair, smirky-looking
Dworkin- crazy little dwarf
Oberon- long hair, beard

Tonight I tried out for a community theater production of Pirates of Penzance. I love the show, have done it twice already (although that second production was the worst play I've ever been in), and love G&S in general. I have also always, always been chorus. No matter how well I audition, there just aren't that many alto roles in G&S. Every operetta has the soprano ingenue, a couople sidekicks with a few lines each (who are also either sopranos or mezzos), and an older-woman alto. I've never gotten the older-woman alto role, and that's always been fine, because I enjoy faffing about as a featherheaded G&S chorus girl. I know I could do a lot with a bigger role, but it just doesn't happen often. (Twice, actually, and the second time was a small role with one scene. Neither of these were G&S.)

So tonight, I warmed up for about an hour, watching my old tape of Ruddigore and singing along. Then I walked down to the theater, forgetting my score, and went in to audition. No score meant no accompaniment, but I've got good tone memory, so I went a capella and did probably the best vocal audition of my life. Then we learned a short dance combination, then we got to read. I figured I might get to read for Kate or Isabella, if I was lucky. (Sidekick roles.)

Dude. He had me read for Ruth, the alto role. THREE TIMES. The only other woman called for Ruth read it once, and I have to say, I was way better. It helps to have done the play a lot already. :) He had me read the same scene twice against two different men, which gives me hope. Maybe my unending chorus habitation is about to end.

I don't flatter myself that this is any extraordinary ability on my part. I just think I'm up against a less knowledgeable and less theater-focused group of people. GG&SS auditions were way harder, because we had so many theater majors, music majors, etc. who came to law school for whatever reason. These are teenagers and a few older people who don't seem as cutthroat. :)

I'll find out Wednesday. It'd be cool to have an actual role (with lines! and solos!) but if it doesn't happen, no big. I know all the chorus music, I like singing it, and this will just be fun.

Hope that goes well for you! ^^

Thanks, babe. :)

Cool! You'll post here when you find out, RIGHT? :)
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:17 pm (UTC)
Of course! You don't think I'd miss an opportunity to squee, do you? :)

I am the very model of a modern Major General.

I have information vegetable animal and mineral.

That's all I know. Good luck with the audition. I'd kill to have your chutzpa.
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:23 pm (UTC)
Dude, it takes WAY more chutzpah to stand up in court and say things. I couldn't do it. First year, when we had to argue our briefs? I could barely speak. It was terrible.

V. cool. E's finishing up a production at Sheperd U--he's the music director. It runs the wkd after this one. So he's singing the songs all over the house. I've actually never seen a production, though of course I know the Modern Major General song, so I'm looking forward to it.
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:23 pm (UTC)
It's totally silly and totally fun. :) This will be the third time I've done it, and I'm never bored with it.
vlynnvlynn on January 31st, 2006 06:19 am (UTC)
Yay! Fingers crossed! So glad you're going for it...sounds like that should really shake that boredom! :)
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:25 pm (UTC)
I think it will! :) Also, I'm coming to the end of my months-long vacation, I think. I'm getting in gear to really go after jobs. Whee!
Johnflirtaciousj on January 31st, 2006 06:20 am (UTC)
Merde! Ruth is a good part, easily the best "older woman alto" role in the lexicon.

And for the record, I thought you were great in Rumors. I have the poster for that show (with a couple of dozen other show posters) on the wall of my office :)
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:27 pm (UTC)
I don't know, I think I like Dame Hannah and Katisha better. :) But Ruth is definitely a good part. And I think, if I'm Ruth, that I'd get to do "With Catlike Tread," right? That would be AWESOME. Is she in "Sighing Softly" as well? Eeee, how fun would that be!

Rumors was so much fun! That was my only big part ever in GG&SS. But I look hideous in the poster! Bleh!
Johnflirtaciousj on January 31st, 2006 01:06 pm (UTC)
Dame Hannah's pretty cool, and Katisha's right up there. Mad Margaret ... now THERE'S a part!

And don't worry, everyone on that poster looks lousy except Beth. Dave looks constipated, Sean dorky, and somehow they managed to make you, Rachel, and Mattie look less than fabulous. One of you? Lighting. Two of you? Difficult. All three of you? Are you kidding me?

Oh, and Charles just looks autistic on the poster.

I can't figure out who Beth slept with to get that treatment. Or maybe the Director just wanted to sleep with Beth. Hmmmm
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 01:42 pm (UTC)
Hmm, you're right. We all look nuts, except Beth, who looks seductive. :)

Hmm, I wonder how the director felt about Beth. ;) Hee hee hee.

And dude, I would SCREAM to get Mad Margaret. Watching that video last night, I was cracking the hell up over that scene between Emma and Laura. "I am Rose Maybud, and I would fain not die, pop."

"I made an affidavit once. But it died... it died..."

I hope this theater group does more G&S. I desperately want to do Ruddigore again. If I get in good with them, maybe I can even direct! Squee!
Psychedjpsyche on January 31st, 2006 06:45 am (UTC)
Very cool!! I hope you get the part!
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:28 pm (UTC)
Thank you! It's just community theater, but hey, it's fun.
fangirlsays on January 31st, 2006 08:56 am (UTC)
Good luck on the role, hon. *crosses all crossables for you*
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:28 pm (UTC)
Thank you, sweetie! *hugs*

I didn't know you were casting for Amber pictures! Cool!
Did you ever see The Visual Guide to Castle Amber?
Among other things, it has a section on the Trumps and gives pictures and descriptions of each character. Honestly, I wasn't thrilled with most of the artwork, but it is still interesting to examine.
Here's a link to scans of the section on the trumps

Good luck on Pirates!

Bleys, Brand and Fiona were all redheads. I don't clearly recall anything else about their physical appearance.
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 12:36 pm (UTC)
I never saw that! Thank you! That's going to be incredibly helpful! I've been going by the description in Nine Princes when Corwin first finds the Trumps. I hope you like my artwork better than the official stuff. ;)

*looks at it*

OMG, could the Corwin picture be any more of a Gary Stu? Ack! You're right, I'm not down with these pics at all. Mine are going to be less faithful to the book's descriptions, probably, but oh well.
Jer: Someone to watch over me - Ryanlugonn on January 31st, 2006 12:45 pm (UTC)
I thought Gerard was probably the worst one - he looks like a total lush. But Corwin - definitely Gary Stu. I felt that the Corwin pic looked like Timothy Dalton. Just shave off the mustache in this pic:

Also the text descriptions were sometimes downright inaccurate. Consider the description for Eric:

The only King of Amber to die in battle, Eric spent most of his adult life figuring out how to get the throne. He was rash and scheming, Machiavellian to an extreme, and he refused at all times to surrender. Determination of this intensity has its price, of course, and for Eric that price was a paranoia that bordered on the psychotic. His hatred of Corwin was probably the strongest hatred in the Amber royal family; eventually it led to his rashest act of all, his self-coronation as King of Amber. That act, more than any other, spelled his defeat. On the field of death, however, he proved his love for Amber by giving the powerful Jewel of Judgement, the only thing that could save Amber, to his most hated enemy.

He crowned himself king because of his extreme hatred of Corwin? I think not.

It amused me that Caine looks like a pirate. Not completely accurate, but it still amused me.

I bought the book long ago. Afterward looking through it, I regretted it.

I screwed up the img link above. Trying again ...

Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 01:34 pm (UTC)
That looks more Pierce Brosnan to me, actually. :)

How noble do you look? Do you want to be one of my princes?
Jerlugonn on January 31st, 2006 02:32 pm (UTC)
Nah. I'm not royal. Plus I hate getting photographed.

Hmmm ... who would I look like ... I suppose I'd be closest to Gerard since he was thick-bodied.

Who would I want to look like ... I think Eric. He sounded rather pretty with his blue eyes.

Who would I like to be ... actually they're all so fucked up that I don't really want to be any of them - at least not if I had to live their entire life. Julian's life probably wouldn't be bad - and in the end he wasn't as much of an ass as we originally thought. If he were a bit less evil, then I'd be Brand - the scholar. Maybe Bleys is a good compromise since he's less scary than Brand but still scholarly. If we ignored gender, then I think my choice would be Fiona - smart, sexy, devious - she was fun. I'd have liked to see more of her. But I'd never want to be a girl - being a boy feels just right for me.

I think you'd be Llewella - sensitive and sad. Then again, she might be too much of a limp noodle to represent you. You're in the foreground a bit more than her.
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 03:59 pm (UTC)
Eric did sound pretty. :) I need an Eric. I have a Gerard, yay.

I wouldn't want to be any of them. I think I would've been Deirdre. And then Brand would've killed me. :)
Elletheletterelle on January 31st, 2006 01:32 pm (UTC)
Gerard totally looked like a goofball. My Gerard looks very cool. :) Of course, I didn't have to draw him...

Also, Eric's hatred was so not the strongest in the royal family. Why else would he have burned Corwin's eyes out rather than kill him? He knew there was a chance they'd regenerate. That blurb is really unfair to Eric.
